PERILOUS TIMES * Free Speech in Wartime* by Geoffrey R. Stone

i'm sitting here listening to the blues, reading this book, and diligently ignoring all my dirty clothes calling out to be washed. it's a good book, even though it goes well with the down and dirty blues in my ears. for example, did you know that the Sedition Act of 1798 is almost exactly the same as the Patriot Act? did you know President Abraham Lincoln suspended the writ of habeas corpus and declaired martial law? i'm going to leave out of this delightful list of examples all the obvious things like Japanese Concentration Camps in Colorado (which my sister's mother-in-law grew up right next to and used to go throw rocks at the little Japanese-American kids for fun. she still dosn't like asians.) and McCarthyism and Vietnam protests and the fact that they're shipping out without habeas corpus Canadian citizens who have lived in this country for the past 12 years. no need to mention current events, or the networks censoring Kanye West.

yeah. bums me out, too. which is why i'm listening to Buddy Guy sing One Room Country Shack. i mean, when you're down, ya might as well sing/listen to the blues.
